Environment Canada issued two red tornado warnings in different parts of eastern Ontario between 2 and 3 p.m. Thursday.

Specifically, Environment Canada had singled out Glen Robertson, Ont., near the Quebec border as one area at risk from a tornado and the Morton, Ont., area north of Gananoque as another.

There were no immediate reports of damage, injury or widespread outages, including from municipal officials in some of the affected areas.

CBC News has not seen widespread damage in places such as Maxville and Alexandria, where people reported heavy rain.

People in the affected area were asked to shelter in a basement or room away from windows, or lie in a low spot.

The warnings were red, the highest level on Environment Canada’s three-colour scale, indicating life-threatening weather that could cause extreme disruption.

A warning goes out either when a tornado sighting has been reported, or when there’s sufficient evidence to suggest a tornado is on the way.

WATCH | Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell explain the tornado risk:

Environment Canada provides update on Tornado warnings in eastern Ontario

Environment Canada has ended a red tornado warning for the Gananoque., Ont., area east of Kingston. It was the second tornado warning between 2 and 3 p.m. in eastern Ontario after a separate red tornado warning east of Ottawa for communities including Clarence-Rockland, Russell and Hawkesbury.

A risk of tornadoes and strong winds remained for a few hours afterward in much of the rest of the region.

Those severe thunderstorm watches and warningd were yellow, the lowest on the scale.
