Nearly 39 million viewers watched Fox’s English-language presentation of the World Cup final on Sunday afternoon, making it the most-watched soccer broadcast in U.S. television history. The prior soccer broadcast record in the U.S. was the U.S. men’s national team’s recent Round of 16 match against Belgium (over 33 million viewers), which won 4-1 in decisive fashion.

Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time, which may have been Lionel Messi’s final international match donning the blue and white, reached a peak audience of 51,685,000 viewers from 5:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET, according to Nielsen ratings.
Meanwhile, based on an announcement from Telemundo, 23.9 million viewers tuned into Spanish-language coverage on the network and Peacock, bringing the total viewership in the U.S. to around 65 million viewers. Spain’s win over Argentina — its second World Cup title — is now the most-watched soccer match in Spanish-language history.
The World Cup final match window alone on the Fox broadcast had 42.5 million viewers, according to an announcement from the company on Tuesday evening. Fox also averaged over 7.7 million viewers across the 104 matches in the World Cup, meaning the 2026 edition of the global sporting event was the most-watched in U.S. history.
Over the 39-day tournament, nine matches on Fox hit the previous record for the most-watched men’s World Cup broadcast of all time (16,784,000 viewers). The mark was previously set by France and Argentina in the thrilling final four years ago in Qatar.
