It might not have been the most thrilling Super Bowl but the Seattle Seahawks got a statement win over the New England Patriots on Sunday night. They used a smothering defense, opportunistic offense and high-level special teams to get the dominant 29-13 win. This game got us thinking about the Pittsburgh Steelers and what makes them different from these teams and how can they take those next steps under new head coach Mike Tomlin.
Here are three things the Steelers can learn from Sunday’s game.
You’ve gotta nail those first-round draft picks
The Seahawks built their team around the NFL draft, and looking back at their last five first-round picks, all had significant impacts on the game. Offensive tackle Charles Cross, cornerback Devon Witherspoon, wide receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba, defensive tackle Byron Murphy and guard Grey Zabel all had huge performances and this is a great example of how you can more freely fill in spots with veterans when your draft picks are so good.
Having a playmaker at receiver is a must
For the Patriots, their lack of playmakers in the passing game really held them back. New England limped along all season with a lot of No. 2 and No. 3 wide receivers, but the lack of a go-to option made things tough on Drake Maye. This is a lesson the Steelers must learn, no matter who plays quarterback in 2026.
The offensive line is so important
One area the Steelers have to go into the offseason excited about is the offensive line. After watching the Seahawks beat up the Patriots’ offensive line all game long, it feels good to know how well the Steelers’ offensive line played last season, especially given their injury issues. It also means the left guard position is the top priority with Isaac Seumalo set to hit free agency.
