3M pounds of popular Trader Joe’s foods yanked in recall due to glass contamination

Over 3 million pounds of popular Trader Joe’s foods have just joined a sweeping nationwide recall due to glass contamination.

Ajinomoto Foods North America, Inc. started recalling nearly 3.4 million pounds of Trader Joe’s Japanese Style Fried Rice with Edamame, Tofu, and Hijiki Seaweed in early March, reported KTLA.

Federal officials raised the alarm after the product was found to contain glass fragments measuring 1 to 3 cm long and 2 to 4 mm wide, the report said.

Last week, the FDA labeled the recall as Class II, warning that the product could cause temporary or reversible health issues.

The contaminated items were sold at Trader Joe’s locations nationwide.

Shoppers who bought these products are urged to steer clear: toss them out or bring them back to the store, the report advises.

Ajinomoto Foods North America Inc. also recalled a massive 9,885,240 pounds of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice earlier this week after slivers of glass were found in the one-pound meals. The products were sold in 43 states.

The measure was the expansion of a preexisting recall that was issued on Feb. 19 and later expanded on March 3, per an FDA advisory.

Affected items included Trader Joe’s Chicken Shu Mai — chicken and veggie dumplings with soy sauce — and Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice with stir-fried rice, veggies, eggs and seasoned dark meat chicken.

According to the recall notice, an investigation revealed that a “vegetable source ingredient, specifically carrots, was the likely source of the glass contamination.”
