Bill Self announced Wednesday afternoon that he will return for another season as head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks.
There have been questions about whether Self would retire after he mentioned that he would be discussing his coaching future with his family due to concerns over health-related issues in recent years.
Self’s announcement is big news for college basketball, as it looked like it could be possible that Kansas could join North Carolina as two of the biggest brands in college basketball looking for a head coach this offseason.
For Kentucky fans, though, the question now becomes: Will this lead to Tyran Stokes, the top-ranked prospect in the nation, choosing to play at Kansas instead of Kentucky?
The belief among many of those following this recruitment has been that Stokes has been waiting to see if Self would be on the sideline for Kansas next season before making a decision between the Jayhawks and the Wildcats.
Some thought Stokes would make an announcement at the McDonald’s All-American game Tuesday night, but ultimately decided to wait, likely in part due to Self having not made an announcement yet.
It was no guarantee that Kentucky would land Stokes even if Self had opted to retire, but with Self now in the fold at Kansas, it certainly creates more of a challenge for the Kentucky coaching staff.
