THE body of a missing granddad has been found 16 days after he was involved in a fatal car crash with cops urging witnesses to come forward.

A desperate search for Garry Peterson, 47, involved police helicopters and sniffer dogs with his smashed car being found almost two weeks before he was.

Garry was first reported missing on October 13 after last being seen in Rainham, East London on October 2.

His car, a blue 2008 Peugeot 207, was found empty and abandoned following a single car crash by the Metropolitan Police.

Cops reportedly scoured the area with specialist dogs and helicopters looking for the vehicle’s owner, but no one was found.

Essex police launched an appeal to find the grandfather from Canvey Island after he was reported missing on October 13, after he was last seen on October 2.

Garry’s body was found more than two weeks later, on October 18, at the crash site, despite remaining undetected for 16 days.

His ex-partner and mother of his three children, Shelley Taylor, claims Garry was in the car at the time of the crash.

Since the tragedy she has raised concerns about the handling of the case, questioning how her ex-partner’s body was not discovered “laying out there” for 16 days.

Shelley told the Basildon, Canvey, Southend Echo that the family had been “robbed” of their “brilliant” dad, granddad and her “best friend”.

“It was just so confusing because his phone was just ringing for days.

“It was just not like Garry. I dropped to my knees and I was sobbing my heart out.

“How was he laying there for that many days?

“I just keep thinking that he will walk back through the door because he would always show up” she said.

Months later, the Met is still looking to speak to anyone who might have any information about the crash or Garry’s disappearance.

Detective Constable Fayyadh Alwi, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath, said: “Officers are providing support to Mr Peterson’s family and our thoughts remain with them.

“Our investigation has continued into the circumstances of the collision, but we are keen to hear from anyone who may have information or saw what happened, including if they have any dashcam footage.”

“Please come forward if you can help.”

Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting reference 7538/2Oct25. You can also submit details via the Met Police online reporting portal.
