Brand New Day’ Ties An MCU Rotten Tomatoes Review Score Record

Critics have chimed in, and now it’s audiences’ turn to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which went live last night in early previews, and shows continue throughout the weekend in earnest. Already, however, enough people have seen Brand New Day to start scoring the film online, and as it stands, the movie has tied an MCU Rotten Tomatoes score record.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a 98% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, which is tied with one other, perhaps surprising film, Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings, which also has a 98%. That’s also one point above the last Spider-Man film, No Way Home. Here’s the list of the top-scoring MCU movies:

  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day – 98%
  • Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings – 98%
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home – 97%
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home – 95%
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – 92%
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – 92%
  • Iron Man – 91%
  • Black Widow – 91%
  • Marvel’s The Avengers – 91%
  • Avengers: Infinity War – 91%
  • Avengers Endgame – 90%
  • Captain America: Civil War – 89%
  • Thor Ragnarok – 87%
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – 87%
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming – 87%
  • Doctor Strange – 86%

However, a caveat. It’s early. There are not that many reviews in from these early previews, and those that are in, well, if you rushed to go see Spider-Man: Brand New Day before anyone else in the country, you may be prone to liking it more than other people might. Still, given that before this, two of the top three audience-scored MCU movies ever were Spider-Man films, and many critics are calling Brand New Day the best one, it seems like these figures could stay this high, or at least close to it. The Spider-Man films also boast some of the best box office returns in the MCU, with Spider-Man: No Way Home earning a colossal $1.9 billion in 2021, which makes it not only one of the best-earning MCU films, but one of the best in Hollywood history. Indications are that Brand New Day will sail over a billion at the box office, but just how far over we don’t know yet.

I’m also starting to track IMDB scores for the film, where there are a lot more reviews in already, albeit not “verified” ticket reviews. Brand New Day has an 8.2/10 there, above the 7.4, 7.3 and 8.1 for Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home, respectively. That certainly has caused me to raise an eyebrow. We’ll keep tracking both its reception and box office from here.
