The secret is officially out for one of California’s best-kept secrets.

Cambria, the quiet village tucked into a pocket of Monterey pines on the Central Coast, has been named one of the top weekend escapes on the West Coast by WorldAtlas.

Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the town of 6,000 residents remains a world apart from the bustle of the state’s major hubs.

Its unique intersection of coastal wilderness and refined local culture makes it an ideal weekend getaway.

Moonstone Beach serves as the primary draw, where a scenic boardwalk winds along rugged bluffs offering front-row seats to migrating gray whales.

Just a few miles north, the Piedras Blancas rookery provides a rare wildlife spectacle where thousands of elephant seals haul out on the sand.

For those looking to move, the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve offers miles of trails that thread through Monterey pines and along oceanfront cliffs, providing views that rival any in the state park system.

The experience isn’t limited to the outdoors. In the town’s West Village, local staples like Moonstone Cellars on Cornwall Street offer a taste of the region’s viticulture –– pouring local merlots in an atmosphere that refuses to be rushed.

As more travelers look for authenticity over crowds, Cambria’s blend of pines and Pacific surf is proving that a two-day stay can offer more restoration than a week spent elsewhere.

Beyond the Central Coast, other small California towns were also ranked highly by WorldAtlas. Carmel-by-the-Sea concentrates art galleries and fine dining into a compact square mile, complemented by the stunning scenery of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and the pristine white sands of Carmel Beach.

In the Santa Ynez Valley, a famous Danish-style village Solvang offers distinctive architecture, bakeries and traditions. It also provides unique diversions like the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum and high-speed ziplining nearby.

For those looking for a quieter coastal experience, Carpinteria offers a low-key atmosphere with calm waters at its popular city beach ehile Ojai provides a scenic getaway characterized by independent shops and the famous “Pink Moment” alpenglow over the Topatopa Mountains.
