California’s best sandwich shop revealed — but there’s an unexpected twist

A Los Angeles sandwich shop has been crowned the best in California — but fans of cold cuts should cover their eyes.

Maciel’s Plant Butcher, which whips up vegan-only creations in Highland Park, was named tops in the Golden State and fifth-best in America, according to a recent ranking by Only In Your State.

The site embarked on a quest to uncover 50 standout eateries, weighing popularity, reviews, plaudits and reader nominations.

Maciel’s came in at No. 1 by proving “that plant-based sandwiches can be just as crave-worthy as their meat-filled counterparts,” according to the ranking.

“Using house-made vegan meats and thoughtful flavor pairings, the sandwiches here are bold, satisfying, and anything but an afterthought,” the site’s description read.

“Even non-vegans are won over by the creativity and depth of flavor, making this shop a standout for modern, forward-thinking sandwich lovers.”

The faux meats filling Maciel’s sandwiches include soy steak, chorizo and chicken salad, as well as tofu turkey and a tempeh burger. Traditional cured meats like salami and pastrami are made from seitan.

Fans of shop have flooded Yelp to call out their favorites.

“The breakfast burrito hits every time,” one wrote. “The Santa Fe and the Californian are both super solid and the mac salad is delicious. Easy recommend.”

Proof veganism is for everyone: “Hands down the best sandwich of my life! Even before I was vegan I never had a sandwich better than this!! My partner isn’t vegan but they also approved it! Can’t wait to go back and try other options!!”

Another wrote that Maciel’s Rueben sandwich “is mindblowingly delicious. Like next level good. Trust me,” chimed a third.

The shop’s sandwiches are priced from $13.50 to $17.
