Dr. Oz Defends Trump’s Repeated Medical Checkups: ‘He Likes the Results’

Topline

President Donald Trump continues to get medical checkups because he “likes the results,” Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz told reporters at a White House press briefing on Tuesday, claiming he believes the president is “curious to make sure everything is going in the right direction” and brushing aside concerns about his repeated visits to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Key Facts

Presidents typically release the results of a medical exam once per year, but Trump has gone in for four exams since returning to office in January 2025—including a physical exam most recently at the end of May.

Oz, a medical doctor and former daytime television host, said the exam Trump sat for last week was a “routine, regular exam,” and said Trump’s records released days later were “spectacular.”

The results, released by the president’s physician Dr. Sean Barbabella, said Trump’s “demanding daily schedule,” which include “high-level meetings, public engagements, and regular physical activity,” supported his health.

Oz called Trump a “very meticulous person,” and said it made sense to him why he would want frequent medical checkups: “For him to know all the numbers and keep on top of them, it’s the same reason he calls people at odd hours—because something’s on his mind and he wants to deal with it.”

Key Background

Trump’s health has been a frequent topic of speculation during his second term in office. Photos of bruises on the president’s right hand were explained away by Barbabella last year as “frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin,” though bruising has since appeared on Trump’s non-dominant left hand. In July, the White House said he was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency—a common vein condition that causes swelling around the ankles.

Crucial Quote

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Oz praised Trump’s “energy” despite his age. “I work with him, frequently, many of you get to see him almost every day,” Oz said. “That amount of energy, and that amount of mental acuity does not exist in a vacuum. You have to have a vessel to carry it, and the president has a unique ability to just keep going at all hours of the day with remarkable strength.” Trump turns 80 next month, and is slated to be the oldest person to hold the presidency when he leaves office.
