Former NFL defensive end Josh Mauro has died at 35 years old.

Mauro’s father, Greg Mauro, announced his death in a Facebook post on Tuesday. The Las Vegas Raiders later confirmed his death.

Mauro died on April 23. A cause of death was not revealed.

“With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord — we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend,” Greg Mauro wrote on Facebook. “On Thursday, April 23rd, Josh breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven.”

Mauro played eight seasons in the NFL from 2014-2021. He played six of those seasons across two stints that bookended his career with the Arizona Cardinals. He played a single season with the New York Giants in 2018 and another with the Oakland Raiders in 2019.

The Raiders offered condolences in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

“The Raiders mourn the loss of Josh Mauro, who passed away last week,” the team statement reads … “The deepest condolences of the Raiders family are with Josh’s family and friends at this time.”

Mauro’s former teammate with the Cardinals, Adrian Wilson, posted a tribute to Mauro on social media upon hearing the news.

“Had the opportunity to be around Josh for several years with [head coach Bruce Arians],” Wilson wrote. “Always in shape, always ready to go wherever he got that call.

“One of the things I respected most about him. You could depend on him.”

Mauro was born in England, but moved with his family to Texas when he was three years old. He was a standout player at L.D. Bell High School in the Forth Worth suburb of Hurst, Texas and went on to play four seasons at Stanford.

Mauro played in 80 NFL games, including 40 starts.
