Fury after play park BULLDOZED over fears rain made slide ‘a safety hazard’

A CHILDREN’S play park has been bulldozed over fears that rain made the slide a “health hazard”.

But furious residents say the once-popular area has been turned into “a quagmire” — leaving kids with nowhere to go.

They say the play park was deemed unsafe after repeated heavy downfalls.

Mum Jennifer said: “We were told the slide got too slippery in rain. Every slide is slippery when wet.”

Housing association Places for People, which manages the Nidderdale estate in Wollaton, Nottingham, said the play equipment “no longer met current safety standards”.

But five months after the slides, monkey bars and swing tyre were ripped out, the housing firm has yet to clear the mountain of soil.

Diane Short, 69, said: “I’ve got 11 grandchildren, and they always played there. Now they’ve got nowhere to go.”

Julie McTague, 66, said: “It’s a big area and it looks awful now.”

Councillor Steven Battlemuch said: “Residents were told they’d have to pay £25 a week to replace the park. No one is going to pay that.”

“It wasn’t big, but it was at least somewhere children and families could go, now it’s just a pile of mud.”

Places for People said: “We consulted residents and the majority didn’t want to replace it.

“We are exploring community improvements.”
