On Tuesday, the New York Giants released Odell Beckham Jr., ending what was supposed to be a fairy-tale reunion with the team that drafted him in 2014. Although Beckham was impressive throughout the offseason, that promise didn’t translate into production over the first three games of the season, and the Giants ultimately decided it was time to release the veteran.
Even with his lack of production this season and without a catch through three games, Beckham’s release shocked many, including some of his teammates.
“Wish him the best; he’s a legend in the game — he’s definitely going to be able to make a statement somewhere,” Kayvon Thibodeaux told reporters.
Tight end Isaiah Likely shared similar sentiments.
“Yeah, I mean, hearts out to him. I mean, obviously, I loved playing with O. Played with him the past couple of years. I was blessed to play with him in Baltimore and again here. Hopefully, wherever he ends up, he does what Odell does. But looking forward to the Cardinals,” Likely said.
Likely and Beckham were teammates in 2023, when they both played under John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens.
Beckham’s teammates, and Beckham himself, appear to believe he will sign with another team and make an impact elsewhere. In the coming days, there will likely be more information on what went into the decision to release Beckham after just three games and limited opportunities to contribute. Jordan Schultz reported Tuesday that the release was a mutual decision.
Beckham was a fan favorite during and well beyond his first stint with the Giants. The end of the reunion is a tough pill to swallow for Beckham and those who were rooting for his success this season, including his Giants teammates, who were clearly taken aback by the news.
