In the age of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), we’ve witnessed remarkable changes, including student-athletes arriving on campus in Lamborghinis and freshman stars like BYU’s AJ Dybansta earning $5 million annually to play for the university.
However, it’s uncommon for a university to fully embrace this culture in all its facets. High Point University is a bit unique.
High Point University, located in North Carolina, just 20 miles from Greensboro, is gaining attention on social media for its thrilling 83-82 victory over Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon. However, the excitement extends beyond just the game.
The university is known for its unique traditions, often referred to as “life skills,” which some may find quite unusual. For instance, the university has built a steakhouse where students can enjoy meals as part of their on-campus meal plans. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, administrators believe that “job interviews and client deals often happen over meals,” so they wanted students to experience these situations firsthand. Reservations are required, and phones are not allowed during meals.
Additionally, the campus features a mock airplane cabin, allowing students to practice interacting with executives as they would on flights. They view this as preparation for once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
It gets even better: while the average college student might opt for an Uber, students wearing school merchandise can catch a free shuttle to and from campus from the airport. However, if you’re not wearing the university’s gear, the shuttle will cost you $95, a concept referred to in the WSJ article as “brand awareness.”
