Just when you thought she could not get any cooler, there’s this: Dolly Parton was an uncredited producer behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the cult horror hit that aired for seven seasons starting in 1997. The country superstar, who passed away on Tuesday at age 80, didn’t talk about the connection a lot, just like she preferred to avoid tooting her own horn for her notable charity work.
But Buffy as we now know it may not have existed without the backing of such a big name. When news broke of Parton’s death today, Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a clip on Instagram of Parton discussing the show on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live in 2021.
Immediately, Buffy fans who hadn’t previously known the connection sent the show trending along with Parton’s name. It’s a small piece of pop culture history that somehow seems to fit right in with the singer’s story—she was always lifting up underdogs and supporting people who needed a champion. In the early 1990s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the cause in need.
Did Dolly Parton Help Produce Buffy The Vampire Slayer?
Yes, Parton served as an uncredited producer on the show through a production company she started with Sandy Gallin, her onetime manager. Sandollar Productions launched in 1985, and it produced a number of films through 1998, when Gallin retired, including Father of the Bride in 1991 and Sabrina in 1995.
In 1992, the company backed a film called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, penned by a rookie screenwriter named Joss Whedon. The film about a cheerleader who became a vampire slayer (“the chosen one”) by night got mixed reviews and did terribly at the box office despite its stellar cast, including star Kristy Swanson, love interest Luke Perry, Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer and Paul Reubens.
But Whedon wasn’t done with the idea. Blaming the film’s terrible box office—it earned just $16.6 million—on his lack of creative control, Whedon filmed a new, slightly adjusted version that the WB network picked up for television.
Sandollar Productions was once again one of the producers. It produced the show throughout its run, though the company later transitioned to the name Southern Light Productions following Gallin’s retirement. The company also produced the Buffy spinoff Angel.
Parton, while uncredited, was not uninvolved. Producer Gail Berman once told The New York Times that the singer sent her an additional paycheck when she learned Berman received a lower cut of royalties than the male producers.
And Gellar told Jimmy Fallon that Parton even sent the cast holiday gifts early in their run.
Dolly Parton Was Involved In Buffy Reboot
When the first attempt to reboot Buffy came in 2024, Parton told People that it was being revamped after the idea was hatched in 2022. More recently, in 2026, a Hulu version of the reboot was also killed.
