Jared Verse had one request for Rams after being traded to Browns

The Los Angeles Rams’ trade for Myles Garrett was a complicated one. It was months in the making, and given the magnitude of it, it was difficult to keep under wraps.

Both the Rams and Cleveland Browns managed to prevent any leaks before the news broke on Monday, which was important with Jared Verse being involved in the deal. Not only did Sean McVay make sure to tell Verse he was being traded before word got out, but Verse wanted to let his teammates know himself.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared in his column Friday that Verse had one request for the Rams: that he be the one to tell the team in a meeting that day, which the Rams granted him.

So at 9:45 a.m., after position meetings broke and before a 10 a.m. team meeting, McVay asked Verse to come into his office to meet with him and Snead. There, they delivered the news. Verse handled it in a way, in Snead’s words, that a dad would want his son to do it, with just one request—that he be able to tell his teammates in the 10 a.m. meeting.

“Hell, yeah, you can,” McVay said.

McVay spoke highly of Verse’s handling of the trade, saying that he hopes his sons handle difficult conversations the same way that Verse handled that one. It wasn’t an easy message to share for McVay, but after bungling the Jared Goff situation, he’s made a point to deliver tough news to players himself.

“I will say this, what a stud with the way that he handled it,” McVay said. “I don’t want to say that I was surprised, but I was so impressed. When Jordan and Christian eventually go through a challenging conversation, I hope they handle it the way that Jared Verse did. I’m a big fan of his. I know you guys know that. I’ll wish him the best and watch him do his thing but we are really excited, with respect to Jared, about being able to get this guy. It’s a big deal for us.”

In two short years with the Rams, Verse became beloved in the locker room and among fans. His final request in Los Angeles shows the type of leader he was. Some lead quietly with their actions, while others are outspoken.

Verse certainly falls under the second of those two categories, always speaking his mind – whether he was talking to teammates or opponents.
