March 9 (UPI) — The Las Vegas Raiders agreed to acquire cornerback Taron Johnson through a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

Sources told NFL Network, ESPN and The Athletic on Sunday night that the Raiders agreed to send a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to the Bills in exchange for Johnson and a seventh-round selection.

The Bills announced Johnson’s release Friday, but opted to reverse course before that transaction could be finalized.

Johnson, 29, appeared in 13 games last season for the Bills. He logged 57 combined tackles and four passes defensed. The eight-year veteran, who joined the Bills as a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, signed a three-year, $30.7 million extension with the franchise in 2024.

He is under contract through the 2027 campaign.

Pro Football Focus gave Johnson the 69th-best rating among cornerbacks who were in for at least 20% of the maximum snaps played at the position last season. He rated 58th in 2024, among qualifying players.

Johnson was Pro Football Focus’ seventh-best cornerback among those who were in for at least 80% of the snaps in 2023, when he started all 17 games for the Bills. He rated 16th in 2022.

NFL teams are permitted to negotiate with free agents at noon EDT Monday. Teams can officially start signing free agents at 4 p.m. Wednesday, the start of the new league year.
