“Little frustrated at that”: Carrick zeroes in on Man United flaw that annoyed him in West Ham draw

Manchester United caretaker boss Michael Carrick has admitted to being “a little frustrated” by the fact his side didn’t play to their best standards as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham.

United salvage a point

Full of confidence heading into the match, United were abruptly shaken moments after the restart as Tomas Soucek fired West Ham into the lead.

Some pitiful defending from Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez allowed Jarrod Bowen to get on the ball and pick out Soucek, who made no mistake as he sent the ball into the back of the net.

With the advantage secured, West Ham retreated into a disciplined low block, challenging United to find a way through. Carrick’s men struggled to meet that challenge.

The Red Devils appeared destined for their first defeat under Carrick until substitute Benjamin Sesko came to the rescue. He met Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery with a deft touch, guiding the ball home with a stunning finish.

United remain in fourth position in the Premier League table, two points adrift of third-placed Aston Villa and just one above Chelsea in fifth.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Carrick hailed his players for fighting until the very end, although he conceded he was not very happy by the fact the team didn’t match the usual high standards.

Carrick’s post-match thoughts

Carrick said about the result [as quoted by the BBC], “We were ok. I think we were a little disappointed and we were definitely not at our best. It’s times like that when you find a way and move on.”

“I’m a little frustrated at that. It is a tough place to come and we didn’t have that sharpness to find the answers.”

“Great spirit again and we will take the point and move on.”

He added about the performance, “For where we are and being together for a short space of time, In the end we have took a point. It didn’t come easy and tonight we found a way to take a point.”

“We will take some positives from it.”

Asked about Sesko’s strike, Carrick answered, “Fantastic finish. He has done it again. It is important. It is a great finish. Delighted for him. Another big goal and a good step.”

Carrick, who began his senior career at West Ham, voiced his hope that his former club can beat the drop this season.
