Long Island football coach hurls helmet at teen player’s face ‘like a dart’ in bloody scene: family

A Long Island assistant football coach rocketed a helmet at a 16-year-old varsity player’s face “like a dart” — leaving the teen bloodied, needing stitches and with a potential concussion, the kid’s family claimed.

The thoroughly unnecessary roughness allegedly unfolded during an Aug. 26 summer practice at Commack High School, where Suffolk County police confirmed to The Post they’re investigating a dust-up between a player and coach.

The assistant coach — a school board-approved volunteer who’s the head coach’s son — threw a helmet as the teen stood up from the bench, the player’s parents told News 12.

“He saw the coach grab his helmet, running up to him… and threw the helmet, he said overhand, I guess like a dart, really hard…” the boy’s mother Laura Werner told the outlet.

“The face mask hit him and cut him. He was bleeding all over the place.”

The blindside attack sent the boy to the hospital, where he received three stitches under his right eye, News 12 reported.

The teen is also being evaluated for a potential concussion, the outlet reported.

No arrests were made as of Monday.

The boy’s parents accused the nepo assistant coach of being unqualified.

“My son had somebody that was not a certified coach or trainer, a volunteer, and his health, well-being and safety was put at risk,” the teen’s dad Cary Werner said, according to News 12. “And I think there were some things that slipped through the cracks.”

The Post reached out to the boy’s parents, who didn’t respond as of Monday afternoon.

Commack School District officials likewise had not yet responded to a request for comment.

Several football players told The Post that had witnessed the helmet toss but couldn’t say if the coach intended to chuck it at the teenager.
