McDonald’s brings back beloved limited-edition dessert — but fans plead for it to be permanent

That’s some good ol’ apple pie — just like McDonald’s used to make.

On June 22, the Golden Arches will bring back its fried apple pies — a beloved menu item served at the fast food behemoth over 30 years ago, according to content creator Snackolator.

While the deep-fried dessert, which is being brought back in celebration of America’s 250th birthday, has already been available at select stores across the US — including Hawaii McDonald’s locales and a retro store in Downey, California, per The Takeout — it will now be on menus nationwide for the two weeks.

The tasty treats du’jour, which were first served in 1968, will temporarily replace McDonald’s regular apple pies on the menu, which are baked instead of fried.

Comments on Snacolator’s post regarding the pie drop ranged from curious to incredulous.

“WHY NOT JUST MAKE IT PERMANENT AGAIN?” asked one seemingly fed-up commenter, garnering more than 165 likes in support.

“Make it permanent!” added another. “I don’t go to McDonald’s to feel good about myself.”

Indeed, McDonald’s originally took the fried dessert item off the menu in 1992, stemming from dietary concerns about the heaps of extra grease.

For fans of fried fast-food pies — the telltale sign that it’s fried being the crust covered in tiny bubbles — not all hope is lost if you can’t get your hands on the resurrected McDonald’s version.

Popeyes still fries their pies (currently boasting a strawberry cream cheese version on their menu), according to The Takeout, as does Burger King and the Philippines-based Jollibee, which offers a peach mango flavor.

McDonald’s also made a splash in recent months with its addition of a Big Arch burger in March — a whopping 1,020-calorie item, available for only a limited time, that features two quarter-pound patties and signature sauce.
