My Best Smart Home Device Picks for a Desk or Office in 2026

Smart home products aren’t just useful in your kitchen and living room or for guarding your front door. They also pair really well with a home desk, whether you have a dedicated office or a free-for-all space where you keep the family computer.

Here are the devices that make the biggest difference on and around my desk, including smart lights, an all-purpose smart speaker and smart displays that can be used in many ways. Read on to find out how you can give your desk a high-tech new life.

A strong surge protector is the glue that holds all the other desk devices together — and protects them from dangerous electrical surges. I have a full list of recommendations, but consider a smart surge protector like this Tapo model ($42) to make a bigger difference.

These smart power strips let you name each included plug and port based on what you plug into them, and control them remotely, including through common apps like Google Home or Apple Home. You can also turn them on or off with voice commands when they are properly labeled in the app, which is neat if you have connected lights (more on that later) or fans.

Tapo’s version even allows you to track energy costs, which is a huge plus if you’re worried your desk equipment is sapping too much power.

A smart speaker for music and voice commands

Google’s new speaker does a lot right, especially when it comes to audio.

Yes, I like using my smart speaker for basic things like asking it about the weather and traffic, or setting a timer to remember to get up and stretch. But smart speakers can really put the “assistant” in voice assistant when you use them at a desk.

I cover this in more detail in guides like tricks for using Google Home and Nest, but you can use smart speakers to set reminders, add events to your calendar while you’re responding to an email or create a to-do list. Many also have other abilities that make them ready to help out. And they can connect to your streaming services to play music whenever you like.

These desk-friendly speakers are small but have very good audio for their size. Versions like the Echo Dot 5 are small and around $50, but for a big sound upgrade, consider something like the Echo Dot Max, Apple HomePod Mini or Google’s new Home Speaker.

That’s without getting into all the AI features of upgraded voice assistants like Gemini for Home or Alexa Plus. Alexa Plus is especially notable here because it’s free with an Amazon Prime subscription, and you can connect it with third-party services like Uber/Uber Eats, Ticketmaster, TaskRabbit and more for quick ordering while making plans.

A smart display for multitasking and dual-screen use

Think of a smart display as a smart speaker with a touchscreen. That can be surprisingly helpful, especially as a desktop companion. You get all the advantages of a smart speaker, plus the ability to check its work when it’s creating events or to-do lists — plus the option of watching videos, doing a quick internet search or even glancing through your video doorbell.

This second screen at the side of your computer can serve many in-depth purposes, too. You can get caught up in a show, view how-to videos or consult a gaming walkthrough while you’re playing. I’ve found smart displays a bit slower to react than tablets, but the sound is far better, so these displays are much easier to use as a music source or possibly a video chat.

Check out options like the Echo Show 11 ($220) and Nest Hub Max to see what I’m talking about.

A smart heater for programmable, cost-saving heat

Radiant speakers are especially useful near home desks and offices.

Boldr

Normal heaters are nice to have near your desk, but they can be fire hazards, energy hogs and aren’t always easy to operate. I suggest a smart upgrade. This radiant heater from Boldr ($400) is a high-end example, but you can see how it uses less electricity, poses fewer fire hazards and can be mounted on the wall to fit right by a desk without needing much space.

Also, don’t discount the ability to control a space heater via app. That allows you to set schedules to ensure your desk area is warm before you get there, or make sure the heater is turned off no matter where you are.

A smart lamp to set the mood and send reminders

Lamps fit well on a computer desk, especially if you don’t have nearby lights or windows and need extra illumination. But a smart light version, like those in my guide, offers greater versatility and utility.

You can set a smart light to any brightness and color you want, letting you adjust the color temperature and make the light as easy on your eyes as you want. You can even connect these lights to other smart devices in the house to serve as visual notifications.

For example, you program the light to turn blue when a smart lock is unlocked, green when a door sensor is activated or red when a TV is turned on in another room.

You have a couple of options to adopt these smart lights. Depending on the size of the bulb, you may be able to upgrade an existing desk lamp with a smart bulb without changing anything else. Or you could replace a light with something like Ikea’s Varmblixt smart lamp if you have the room.

Light strips for fun and entertainment

For extra flair, today’s powerful lighting strips and panels offer many creative options.

Govee

If you use your desk more for gaming, watching movies or other entertainment, consider a different kind of upgrade. Light strips set around the edges of your desk or monitor (or floor, etc.) can shift colors, flash along with music and match the theme of whatever you’re playing or watching. They typically need only one available outlet to get started and some can even be cut to size.

One of my favorite options for this is the Govee Gaming Light Rope, which lets you set scenes, sync to music and program it exactly how you want with the highly capable Govee app (which now includes an AI assistant you can give prompts to). In fact, you may want to take a look at Govee’s entire gaming and desk section, because there’s a lot there you can play with.

A nearby smart fan to help cool down

SwitchBot’s fan is a smart evolution for a bedroom or office fan, but not everyone needs so many features.

Tyler Lacoma/CNET

A large computer setup can grow hot, and there’s nothing like a fan to help cool things down, especially in summer heat waves. However, putting a fan directly on the desk takes up a lot of room and is too annoying for many people. I suggest putting fans at a distance in the same room instead. Our list of the best smart tower fans is an excellent place to get started. It’s surprisingly pleasant to be able to control your fan speed and direction at a distance with your phone (or smart display), but we have other, less complicated options, too.

If you have a nearby shelf or you prefer your fan up close and personal, you may also consider SwitchBot’s smart desk fan, which is the most advanced model I’ve ever tested.
