George Lucas’ $1-billion Los Angeles passion project is coming into sharper focus, and it’s going to be a blockbuster.
New details have been revealed about what visitors can expect inside the long-awaited Lucas Museum of Narrative Art when the futuristic cultural behemoth finally opens in Exposition Park this fall — including plans for two theaters, film screenings, and the public debut of a shelved animated “Star Wars” comedy series that has gone unseen for more than a decade.
“Star Wars: Detours,” a comedic spin on the space saga developed by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, will finally be shown as part of programming at the museum. The series was announced back in 2012 and was designed as a series parodying the galaxy far, far away — with a tone compared to that of “The Simpsons.”
The series never aired, despite 39 episodes having reportedly been completed and dozens more scripts written. Green dropped the bombshell during the museum’s Comic-Con panel, revealing that a selection of episodes will see the light of the day at the Lucas Museum when it opens.
The buried series featured a stacked voice cast that included Green, Seth MacFarlane, Donald Faison, Felicia Day, Zachary Levi, Anthony Daniel and Billy Dee Williams. The news means the museum won’t just display Lucas’ past, but will essentially become a premiere venue.
The headline numbers are appropriately cinematic: 100,000 square feet of exhibition space, 33 galleries and roughly 1,300 artworks on display, along with film programs and a sprawling outdoor park.
“This project is so vast in scale,” Ryan Linkof, the museum’s senior curator and head of film programs, told ABC7’s “On The Red Carpet” at San Diego’s Comic-Con.
The museum will house two state-of-the-art that will show curated movies throughout the day, allowing guests to wander in and out more like they would a gallery than a traditional scheduled screening. The Robert Flaherty Theater will focus on cinema as a storytelling medium, while the Slavko Vorkapich Theater will explore filmmaking through movement and visual experimentation.
The fresh details offer one of the clearest pictures yet of what the “Star Wars” creator and his wife, Mellody Hobson, have been building for years inside the massive structure, which looks like a giant spaceship that landed next to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The announcements came as museum officials used Comic-Con to reveal exciting programming. The 300,000-square-foot museum sits on 11 acres in Exposition Park and will showcase everything from comics and manga to children’s book illustrations and fine art.
