Newcastle United have a ‘genuine interest’ in AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as Eddie Howe begins plans for a rebuild at St James’ Park.
A disappointing Premier League campaign has accelerated the club’s summer transfer plans, as the Magpies look to overhaul their squad.
Camara is a player of interest to Newcastle, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that initial talks have already taken place. The Premier League side are not alone in expressing interest, however, with several sides across Europe weighing up a bid.
Camara has scored once and provided four assists in Ligue 1 this season, while he ranks among the top 10% of midfielders in France for successful crosses, big chances created, recoveries, fouls won, and interceptions.
With Monaco set to miss out on the Champions League, Newcastle are hopeful Camara can be signed for a reasonable fee.
The 22-year-old was a breakout star in Senegal’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations win, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament, and has already massed 41 caps.
Newcastle are targeting a central midfielder amid doubts over Sandro Tonali’s future. The Italy international is attracting interest from Premier League rivals, including Manchester United and Arsenal.
