Parisians are now flying above the Seine on electric surfboards

Parisians are taking to the Seine on a new type of electric surfboard that lifts riders above the water, creating the sensation of flying.

Known as an e-foil, the board combines an electric motor, a submerged hydrofoil and a rechargeable battery, allowing it to glide above the river’s surface once it gains speed.

“It’s got a board to climb on, and it’s got a mast that’s fitted with a motor at the back. It’s got a wing, like an aircraft wing, and that’s the surface we’re going to use to ‘fly’. Then you put the battery inside, and this battery will give you two hours of autonomy. So you’ll be able to cover 30 to 40 kilometres with it. And as you can see, everything is set up in 10 seconds,” says Nicolas Pernodet, co-founder of Foil in Paris.

Pernodet believes the activity offers a new way to experience the French capital, and says the sport is easier to learn than many people expect.

Participants say the experience is unlike any other water sport. “The feeling you’re after is that of rising up above the water. It’s pretty rare. Personally, I’ve never come across a sport that lets you come out of the water while staying balanced. So it’s quite unique — and what’s more, it’s in Paris,” says Lilian, who works in finance.

Architect Patrick Dakessian agrees: “As soon as you’re flying, especially when you’re over the water, then, when you’re flying, the feeling is incredible.”
