President Donald Trump has weighed in on the status of Lindsay Clancy’s case after her attorney, Kevin Reddington, asked for a presidential pardon when her case ended in a mistrial.
“It’s a very sad situation. I, I certainly heard that. But, look — it’s a very sad, there is no winner there,” Trump, 80, told reporters on Sunday, September 13, while he was in Ireland after attending the Irish Open, according to People.
He continued, “There’s no, there’s no win, no matter what you do. It’s — three children are dead, so I don’t know.”
Trump went on to say he could not pardon Clancy, 36, because the case is “actually a state situation” and “not a federal” case.
He also reacted to Reddington’s request that the president use his “awful lot of clout” to “reach out to” Plymouth County district attorney Tim Cruz as he decides whether or not Clancy will go back to trial.
Trump said he’s “heard from other people” that Reddington is “a very good attorney,” though did not confirm if he would reach out to Cruz.
“I hope they can work it out,” Trump said. “That’s something they have to work out. It’s a very sad — there is no win there.”
Trump made the comments just days after Reddington asked him to pardon Clancy during the September 8 episode of Good Morning America. Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial days earlier on September 4 after the jury was unable to come to a unanimous verdict.
“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady the type of person she is, what she’s been through and consider a pardon,” Reddington said of his client, who was on trial for killing her kids Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan in January 2023.
Throughout the seven-week trial, the defense argued that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible due to her mental health struggles. The prosecution, on the other hand, insisted Clancy was aware of what she was doing when she killed her kids and then attempted to die by suicide.
Trump previously reacted to the case on the day that the mistrial was declared. On September 4, he called the situation a “horrible tragedy” and said he followed the trial because “it’s on television so much” and was “hard not to follow.”
“I assume there’s going to be another trial. It’s a terrible situation,” he continued. “Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse. But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be [a] mental institution or jail or something.”
