Reports: Juventus trying to hijack Tottenham’s deal for Andy Robertson

We know that Juventus are very interested in a player currently employed by Liverpool to become their starting goalkeeper next season. However, it looks as though Juve are looking to try and bring another player from Merseyside, although this one is more of a last-minute kind of style.

No, it’s not Mo Salah or one of other Liverpool’s star players. But it is one of the stalwarts by Merseyside of the last decade at Liverpool who said goodbye to Anfield this past weekend.

According to reports from Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano on Monday night, Juventus are trying to hijack Tottenham’s move for soon-to-be free agent Andy Robertson. Juve have, according to Di Marzio, have made an offer to the 31-year-old Robertson who first signed with Liverpool in 2017 and bid farewell to the club during Sunday’s season finale against Brentford. We don’t know what Juventus might be offering up to Robertson, but there is an attempt to try and sway the Scottish international left back after it’s been looking for a good amount of time that he is bound for Spurs.

Considering Spurs did not getting relegated over the weekend and they’ve been looking like the most likely destination for his services for weeks now, it’s hard to really know if Juventus have much of a chance. Obviously the defense is something that Juventus need a lot of improvement — especially at the fullback position — and money will be tight with the failure to qualify for the Champions League. Therefore, you can understand why a free-agent transfer that could help in defense would be appealing to the Bianconeri front office.

Just how much help Robertson can offer is another matter.

He’s on the other side of 30 years old and if you do any sort of quick look at the simple numbers of how Liverpool’s title defense went this season you will see that their defense was not very good — at all. Robertson played less than 1,200 minutes in the Premier League this season, so it’s not like he was a major player in all of those defensive struggles, but it seems pretty safe to assume that he is not the player he once was a few years ago.

So who knows how much of a chance Juventus have to actually bring another Scotsman to Serie A. He would certainly be a different profile to the others who have made the way from England or other clubs around Europe and made Italy their new home simply because he’s at a different phase of his career. But you have to believe with Scottland set to play their first World Cup game on June 13 that Robertson would probably want his next club lined up before the tournament begins.
