A pilot landed on a rural Manitoba highway Thursday night after issuing an alert to emergency officials.

The small-engine aircraft landed on Highway 45 east of Sandy Lake on Thursday at about 7 p.m., RCMP said in a news release on Friday morning.

The plane was headed from The Pas south to Brandon when the pilot reported they were about to land the aircraft on a highway.

The pilot landed on Highway 45 before coming to a stop in a ditch off the north side of the road, RCMP said.

One of four people aboard was taken to hospital with what RCMP believe are minor injuries.

Manitoba RCMP notified the Transportation Safety Board of the crash.

The board, which is responsible for investigating plane crashes, said in a statement to CBC News that the plane was privately registered and landed near Erikson, Man.

The board hasn’t yet sent a team of investigators to the site, the statement said.
