Steelers training camp: 4 Day One takeaways

One training camp practice is in the books for the Pittsburgh Steelers and there’s already plenty to talk about. New head coach Mike McCarthy has revamped the team and the system in hopes of turning this franchise into a winner again. Here are four big takeaways from the first practice.

Fast paced action

For players who have been on the team for many years, the faster pacing of McCarthy’s practices over those of Mike Tomlin will be a significant adjustment. But if you want to play fast, you have to practice fast. McCarthy even removed the benches from the practice field to keep guys up and moving when they aren’t on the field.

Drew Allar is a work in progress

It was a rollercoaster day for Drew Allar. Videos of the rookie quarterback showed him missing some easy throws but he was also the only quarterback of the day to throw a touchdown in drills. Meanwhile, Mason Rudolph took the second-team reps.

Porter Jr. on the sidelines

Porter Jr. was a suspicious, last-minute addition to the PUP list as he’s seeking a new contract. One Day One, he was on the sidelines, throwing the football around but nothing else. Meanwhile, fellow cornerback Donte Kent, who’s coming back from a torn ACL, was seen sprinting on the sidelines.

Offensive line going to run deep

We got to see Broderick Jones working in as the backup left tackle as he recovers from a neck injury but McCarthy used a load of linemen on Wednesday. He even commented about the need for that depth, hinting that 10 offensive linemen on the final roster isn’t out of the question.
