Sacramento police are on the hunt for a high school student suspected of fatally shooting another child on Friday.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting which took place in “an open area” on the campus of Natomas High School after 3:30 p.m. on the 3200 block of Truxel Road.

The unidentified teen who died was a student at another school nearby, Anthony Gamble with Sacramento police told KCRA3.

“We have a child that has been killed,” Gamble said. “It tugs at the heart of everybody that is out here.”

First responders were reportedly focused on the quad area on campus as well as the gymnasium area, according to KCRA3.

A SWAT team was also seen at a nearby 240-unit apartment complex, with investigators going door to door.

Relatives of the alleged suspect that congregated near the apartment complex urged their family member to surrender.

The juvenile who died was a former Natomas High School student, according to the Natomas Unified School District.

“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire Natomas High School community impacted by this devastating loss,” the district said.

No motive for the shooting has been released but the district informed families that the victim was targeted.

A Multicultural Festival planned for Saturday was canceled and the district will be making counselors available to provide mental health support for students.

There will also be an “increased safety presence” at campuses, according to the district.
