Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was suspended for one game after the WNBA deemed that she “committed a non-basketball act” against Clark by “recklessly making contact with her fist to the throat area.” Now, one of Clark’s teammates is speaking out against the act.
During a recent interview, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham called out the WNBA and the league’s officiating for not doing enough to protect Clark from incidents like this, claiming that the Fever start is “definitely targeted” by opponents.
‘They’re Definitely Targeting Her’
During the most recent episode of her podcast, Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson, Cunningham did not hold back as she called out the WNBA and the league’s officials for failing to do enough to protect Clark on the court.
“I did not see that happen. None of our team saw it happen. Because I promise you, if we would have seen it happen, we would have had her back,” Cunningham said on the podcast. “Unfortunately, this type of [stuff] happens every game to her. And the League and the refs do absolutely nothing about it.”
“They’re definitely targeting her, and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her,” Cunningham added.
Stephanie White Not Happy, Either
This week, Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White addressed the incident. While White was “thankful” that the league reviewed the incident and issued retrospective punishment, she wasn’t necessarily pleased that the referees missed the incident during the game.
“I think the biggest thing for me is that we have to see it in real time,” White told reporters Friday via ESPN. “I mean, yes, I’m thankful that the league went back and used their ability to go back and review it, but these are things that we can’t miss in real time. We’ve got to be better.”
White made it clear that she thinks the officials need to be better.
“I was more surprised that it wasn’t seen by the officials in real time,” White said. “I think the eye discipline, for lack of a better term, sometimes I feel like all the officials are watching the ball and nobody’s watching the play. You have a player that’s down on the ground, certainly some things are going to happen, so I was very disappointed they didn’t see that in real time.”
