Voodoo Doughnut suddenly shutters after short run in Venice

VooDoo Doughnut, the quirky Portland-based doughnut chain known for its wild flavors and cult-like following, has quietly shuttered its Venice Beach location after just one year in business.

Located at 66 Windward Avenue, the storefront appears to have quietly ceased its operations sometime in June. While the company website still displays a tile representing the Venice location, the phone number has been disconnected.

The closure comes as a surprise to many locals who had embraced the late-night spot, famous for its signature VooDoo Doll doughnut, Bacon Maple Bars and other over-the-top creations.

VooDoo Doughnut first opened in Venice in June 2025 just a block from the famous boardwalk and quickly becoming a popular destination for tourists and night owls. The closure leaves a void in the neighborhood’s late-night sweet tooth options.

The company still operates multiple locations in Portland and has expanded to other cities across the US, but the Venice shutdown marks a short-lived experiment in the beach enclave.

Venice represented the brand’s latest foray into the California market outside of its original Portland roots. Its first location in the Golden State was opened in 2017 at Universal CityWalk Hollywood.

Following online posts about the closure, customers took to social media to express their opinions, with many blaming local tastes that didn’t favor the sweet treats while also blaming the sky-high cost of renting in the beachside location.

“I’m not surprised there’s not a huge demand for donuts in Venice,” one account shared on Facebook. “At least not more demand than Dunkin & other shops can satisfy,” to which another responded, “Retail vacancies all over the west side due to the same thing. Greed. Many of the buildings are now corporate owned just like housing. That’s a massive part of homelessness. No corporate controlled governor is ever going to fix that. There needs to be a state wide rent control cap for every county in the state.”

No official statement has been released by the company regarding the reason for the sudden closure or whether the brand plans to maintain a presence elsewhere in West LA, nor would staff confirm the Venice location closure when The California Post reach out for comment.
