Walmart’s wacky $6 rotisserie chicken purse sold out within hours of debut — now selling for 10-times the price

Get the cluck out of here.

Flocks of folks are flying to Walmart for an unlikely duo to celebrate National Chicken Month — the limited-edition rotisserie Chicken Purse. The Arkansas-based chain first rolled out the limited-edition bag on September 1, pricing the purses the same as the store’s real chickens at just $5.97.

The purse, which some shoppers are calling the “Cherkin” — a cheeky play on the Birkin — is available in two “flavors”: traditional and lemon pepper.

Both totes are shaped like its iconic rotisserie chicken packaging with the logo, nutritional facts and all. Each is made from synthetic leather and polyester lining and comes with a shoulder strap.

The retail behemoth prepped customers for its arrival in a press release on August 31, sharing it was cooking up a fashionable twist on its most beloved deli item. Kim Tunick, group director of brand experiences and partnerships at Walmart, said its chickens are so popular on social media, the brand wanted to get in on the love.

“With more than 15K social mentions in the last year, Walmart’s rotisserie chicken has officially reached a whole new level of fan-favorite status,” Walmart said in a statement. “We wanted to celebrate this fandom by giving the rotisserie chicken its own moment. The Chicken Purse turns that love into something customers can carry with them.”

Walmart said its rotisserie chicken is so beloved that roughly one in every 12 Walmart customers scoop up at least one each year.

But good luck getting one; the big box chain said the $5.97 bird bag sold out in just a few hours of dropping. Shoppers willing to spend big clucks can grab one on Mercari — a peer-to-peer online marketplace — for nearly 10 times the original price at $48.

The retail giant will likely drop another as the website hints at “more cooking.”

Customers can also add charms to the bonkers bags, as Walmart has also rolled out a collection of miniature charms, also inspired by popular rotisserie chicken pairings.

The assortment includes:

  • Traditional Rotisserie Chicken Purse Charm — $5.97
  • Lemon Pepper Rotisserie Chicken Purse Charm — $5.97
  • Great Value Louisiana Hot Sauce Charm — $4
  • Great Value Lemon Pepper Seasoning Charm — $4

The bags continue to go viral, dividing customers along the way. One X user posted, “I hate this but want it.”

Another joked that the bag might be the safest item after a slew of recent recalls commenting, “The only thing that’s safe to eat after all these recalls.”
