Gunther And Nick Aldis Sign Their Contract For SummerSlam

• Nick Aldis became a WWE Superstar upon signing this contract. That means Aldis is no longer the GM, and Adam Pearce assumed that role. The contract also came with a hold harmless agreement that stated WWE wouldn’t be responsible for anything that happened to Aldis.
• Fans cheered Aldis and booed Gunther. Gunther went to speak, but his microphone was messed up as it cut in and out. Gunther said this match would be the greatest moment of Nick’s career. Gunther felt this was beneath him.
• Gunther flexed his career in comparison to Aldis, saying Gunther’s watch was worth half Aldis’ yearly salary. Gunther said Aldis was jealous of him and he was just not good enough. Gunther signed the contract and said he’d turn Aldis into a legend because he planned on retiring Nick Aldis.
• Aldis said he figured Gunther out. Aldis said Gunther didn’t want any of this and he saw it in Gunther’s eyes. Aldis said he hasn’t had a match in three years. He had nothing to lose. When he beats Gunther at SummerSlam, he gos from the Career Killer to the man who was made a b—h by his boss. A brawl ensued, and it ended with a low-blow by Gunther and a powerbomb through a table.
• Sami Zayn threw a temper tantrum backstage about riding the bench at SummerSlam and begged Adam Pearce to make the main event a Triple Threat. Sami was instead booked in a No. 1 contender’s match against the winner of a Fatal 4-Way tonight between Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Royce Keys and Trick Williams.

Brie Bella Def. Lainey Reid As Nikki Bella Returns

• Fatal Influence cut a promo with Jacy Jayne vowing to win the United States Championship. Lainey Reid started out hot, but Brie Bella took over and delivered a running knee followed by a bulldog.
• Jacy Jayne interfered, leading to a sunset flip by Reid as she grabbed the rope. Referee Daphanie LaShaunn caught Reid grabbing the rope and held up the count. Brie reversed with a rollup and won the match.
• Fatal Influence attacked Bella and Paige after the match, bringing out Nikki Bella for the big return. Nikki said the Bellas and Paige are the reason Fatal Influence are here. Nikki challenged Fatal Influence to a six-woman tag team match at SummerSlam.

Match Grade: B-

Chelsea Green Def. Kiana James

• Backstage, Gunther had a tense interaction with Finn Balor, who lamented what he called the best and worst night of his life 10 years ago at SummerSlam 2016.
• Fans chanted for Chelsea as Kiana James smothered her with offense. Chelsea answered with a Rough Ryder, but Kiana fired back with a Falcon Arrow. Green hit the Unprettier to pick up the win in the quick match.
• After the match, Damian Priest had to correct R-Truth about the fact that he’s having a Fatal 4-Way match tonight and not a tag team title match. Cody Rhodes showed up and Priest said “the boys” are sick of the same people being the face of WWE. This drew an applause from fans. Cody agreed.

Match Grade: C

Cody Rhodes And CM Punk Face Off

• SmackDown aired footage of Cody Rhodes’ appearance on the Tonight Show where he took exception to CM Punk flinging the WWE Undisputed Championship over his shoulder, “accidentally” hitting Cody with the strap.
• Cody Rhodes made his elaborate entrance, and when his music turned off, there was a mixture of cheers and boos. Rhodes introduced CM Punk, and fans were much more united in their praise for the WWE champion.
• Cody “accidentally” dropped Punk’s microphone when he went to grab it, but Punk instead grabbed another mic from a stagehand. “It’s a damn shame this is where we’re at right now, I don’t even want to turn my back to my friend to grab a microphone?” said Punk.
• Punk suggested Cody was paranoid, but Cody said he wasn’t, admitting Punk’s post-match stunt at SNME was an accident. Cody said he needs to beat Punk “for me.”
• Cody said he loves CM Punk, but he doesn’t like him. Rhodes said he’s done apologizing for what he’s worked for despite the fact that the boys want a new face of the company.
• Cody Rhodes said that for this story to have the proper ending, it’s fair for him to say that he has to beat Punk at SummerSlam. Punk said he casts a very large shadow that a few people can’t get out from underneath. Punk said “in 2022″ (while he was in AEW), Punk learned from Cody that there was a way back to WWE.
• Punk said “nobody can touch me. Not even Dusty’s kid.” Punk’s music played and Cody demanded it be cut off. Rhodes said he’d be a four-time WWE champion as his music played.

Charlotte Flair Def. Nia Jax By DQ

• Charlotte came out of the blocks with a Queen’s Boot but Nia Jax turned the match into a brawl as SmackDown went to commercial early on. SmackDown returned from commercial in time for Charlotte to attempt a high-risk maneuver, but Jax took over with a second-rope leg drop.
• Nia went for the Annihilator, but Jax countered for a nearfall. As Charlotte climbed the ropes to finish off Nia, Jade Cargill’s music hit as Jade and the Baddies made their way to the ring. Jax ragdolled a distracted Charlotte, telling Jade to mind her business.
• Charlotte took out the Baddies on the outside. The distraction led to a Samoan Drop attempt from Nia, but Charlotte escaped and dumped Jax to the outside. Jade hit the ring and struck Charlotte to force the DQ. This is the second week in a row that Nia Jax was disqualified for something that happened outside of her control.
• Jade Cargill hit the Jaded on Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax was steaming on the outside. Nia cleared the announce table while cussing up a storm.

Match Grade: B-

Finn Balor Vs. Royce Keys, Trick Williams And Damian Priest

• Trick Williams ran wild on his opponents as fans chanted “Whoop That Trick!” Finn Balor took over, with a dive to the outside on his opps, just in time for Solo Sikoa to stalk his way to the ring.
• Hometown favorite Royce Keys hit an awesome second-rope powerslam on Balor during picture-in-picture for the nearfall.
• The Usos arrived shortly after Solo Sikoa and the three brothers began brawling on the outside. LA Knight hit the (outside of) ring to even the odds. As the ringside brawl ensued, Damian Priest teased Old School, but instead dived onto the Usos, Solo and Knight.
• Balor hit a shotgun dropkick on Trick Williams, but he missed the Coup de Grace and ate a Cyclo Boot from Trick. The Fatal 4-Way resumed, but Jacob Fatu stopped Keys from a pinfall win over Priest with the Ultimate Spinebuster. Balor took advantage and pinned Priest with the Coup de Grace.
