He already owns three MVP Awards, and many still believe he should have won a fourth after finishing second to Jose Altuve in 2017. Had injuries not interrupted his 2023 season and now his 2026 campaign, Judge may very well have been on pace to compete for six MVP trophies.
That’s the level of player the Yankees have built around. The problem is they’ve relied on him too much.
The Lineup Falls Apart Without Him
No team is expected to replace a player like Aaron Judge. However, the Yankees’ offensive struggles since his injury have been alarming. Outside of Ben Rice and a brief stretch of dominant production from Paul Goldschmidt, nearly every hitter in the lineup has struggled to produce consistently.
That’s not simply the result of losing one superstar. It’s evidence that the supporting cast hasn’t been strong enough for years. When Judge is healthy, his presence changes everything. He lengthens the lineup, forces opposing pitchers to alter their approach, and frequently wins games by himself.
Without him, the Yankees have looked like an entirely different team.
Cashman Hasn’t Done Enough
For years, general manager Brian Cashman has counted on Aaron Judge to erase roster deficiencies. The Yankees have certainly had talented players around their captain, but they haven’t consistently assembled the deep, balanced lineup needed to withstand losing a generational talent.
Championship-caliber organizations prepare for adversity. The Yankees, by comparison, have appeared completely dependent on one player to keep the offense afloat. That’s a difficult formula to sustain over a 162-game season, especially when injuries inevitably occur.
Judge’s absence has revealed what many fans have feared for years: the Yankees simply haven’t surrounded their franchise player with enough reliable offensive talent. As the trade deadline approaches, New York has an opportunity to address some of those issues. But the current collapse serves as a reminder that relying on Aaron Judge to carry the offense every season is not a sustainable blueprint for winning a World Series.
