Body of girl, 10, who drowned in NJ’s Passaic River found 2 days later

The body of a missing 10-year-old girl who vanished while swimming in New Jersey’s Passaic River has been recovered.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora announced Friday that divers found the girl after a couple in a nearby building spotted “something” in the river and immediately dialed 911.

She went missing Wednesday after she and her two friends, who were brother and sister, entered the water near Pulaski Park.

The boy, 10, reportedly drowned while saving his sister, 11, who had been struggling to stay afloat, according to the mayor.

The sister managed to clamber out of the water and was reunited with her parents.

Her brother was found dead about three hours later, roughly 50 feet from where he entered the river, Lora said.

A Good Samaritan had tried to rescue the two drowning children, but was unable to do so because of the river’s raging currents.

The Passaic Fire Department had led the search for the children, whose identities have not been released, but boats and scuba dive teams from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office were also deployed.

The search for the deceased 10-year-old girl was complicated by darkness and high water levels due to storms.

“I ask that you continue to pray for the families and to hold them up in your thoughts because they are in need of your support,” Lora said on social media.
