A couple in the UK couldn’t believe their eyes when they uncovered what appeared to be stacks of money buried inside their old home.
In a viral TikTok video with almost 200,000 views, what looks like a gross, rotted, bug-filled paint can turned out to be a stash of money predating the couple living there.
Living in a pre-1900s home, of course, comes with its weird quirks, so when Luisa and her hubby Dan noticed a bricked-up wall under the steps to their home’s cellar, they wanted to figure out what else was living with them.
Among their findings were some coal and the paint can from the TikTok video that Luisa told Newsweek in an interview was put off to the side “…for months, and we were nervous about opening it as it smelled like ammonia.”
Eventually, when they mustered up the courage to open the mysterious can, they whipped out their phone to record what turned out to be stacks of money from the 1970s — totaling more than £1,000 ($1,336).
“None of us were expecting money inside. It was such a fantastic memory for the kids, they will remember it forever,” she told the outlet.
“It was nice to treat the kids a bit and catch up on any bills,” Luisa revealed as she was out of work at the time. “It took some stress off us for a few weeks.”
The commenters on the video felt the same way.
“What country is it from? That’s fascinating,” one wrote.
“And all we found in our new cellar were rat and squirrel skulls,” said another.
Currency with the queen’s head on can always be exchanged at most banks etc. But it also sells on ebay for more than face value – check for rare notes and years etc.,” someone else pointed out.
This isn’t the first time new homeowners uncovered something shocking hiding within the walls they live in.
One lucky soon-to-be-bride found a wedding dress neatly folded in a box in the secret attic of her and her fiancé’s new home.
In a video with almost 3 million views and overlay text reads: “POV you bought a house with your fiancé and find a wedding dress in the attic,” as the excited engaged woman opens the carefully packaged vintage wedding dress.
Although she couldn’t find the original owner of the dress, she told the Daily Mail that she “really liked the idea of repurposing it into a reception dress or robe to use on the day of the wedding.”
