The Bachelor’s Sean Lowe has broken his silence on his son’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis.
“[It’s] been a lot to process,” Lowe, 42, said in an Instagram video on Thursday, July 23, revealing that his wife, Catherine Giudici, recently took their kids — Samuel, 10, Isaiah, 8, and Mia, 6 — to a routine pediatrician’s appointment, where the doctor noticed some weight loss in Isaiah.
After Giudici, 40, mentioned that Isaiah had been urinating more frequently, the doctor ordered a glucose test. They were then instructed to go to the hospital.
“So we were there Tuesday through Friday, and yeah, it was a lot,” Lowe continued. “It was hard because, as far as we knew, and Isaiah knew, he was a healthy boy. He didn’t really show any symptoms outside of frequent urination, and the next thing he knows, he’s getting blood tests and shots every two hours, which of course he hates as an 8-year-old.”
Lowe added that it was “incredibly difficult” to watch his son “basically scream for help.”
“We’re trying to tell him, ‘Hey, buddy, you have to. It’s good for you. It’s medicine.’ But of course, 8-year-olds don’t fully understand that,” he noted. “So, anyway, we are grateful that our pediatrician was smart enough to do the blood test, and all the doctors and nurses at Children’s Health in Dallas were amazing.”
Lowe added that he and his family are “getting through it,” although Isaiah has struggled with getting five shots a day.
“The hardest part, outside of that, is just kind of the acknowledgement that his freedom to snack as he pleases, or go to a friend’s house and have lunch, like, he can’t do that anymore because we have to stay on top of his carbs and insulin and all that stuff,” he explained. “But what we keep being told over and over again is it will become normal. It’s the new normal, and he’s doing great. Hates the shots, but as soon as he gets the shot, he’s back to his old tricks.”
Lowe concluded by thanking fans for their support and promising to keep his followers updated.
“God is good, and we know Isaiah is going to be OK,” he said.
Giudici first revealed Isaiah’s diagnosis via Instagram on Tuesday, July 21.
“This past week has been a rough one for the Lowes. Our precious boy Isaiah was admitted to Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” she wrote. “Our wonderful pediatrician noticed some symptoms at our annual appointment that stuck out to her.”
She continued, “He had lost 11 pounds since his last visit (we thought he just had a growth spurt) and had been drinking and peeing A LOT (it’s really hot here in the summer). Otherwise healthy and active, she ran some tests and sent us to the emergency room based on those alarming results. Thankful for the nurses, doctors and staff who gave us a four-year college education on his condition in four days.”
Giudici then praised Isaiah for how he has handled his treatment.
“This tough boy has endured countless injections, four days away from his home and a lifestyle and routine that feels very very foreign,” she continued. “He’s done all this without losing his playful spirit and a joy that doesn’t make sense. A lot of tears, pain and confusion too, but he has been a trooper, no question about it.”
