A young mother in Los Angeles was shot and killed through her bedroom window while she slept next to her baby girl and boyfriend in their home.
The victim, 20-year-old Maria Barrios Ventura, was inside her home in the 400 block of West 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood when the shooting happened around 3:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 19.
Ventura was identified as the victim by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
“This sudden and heartbreaking event has left her family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss. She was a loving mother, and her absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her,” a family member wrote in a GoFundMe for the young mother.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) found Ventura suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived at the scene. Police said she had been struck in the head, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Paramedics attempted to save Ventura, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KTLA.
Ventura’s aunt, Liliana Lopez, started the GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses, return her body to Guatemala and support her 1-year-old daughter.
“She was a loving mother, and her absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her,” Lopez wrote.
